Terrainly Open viewer

Privacy Policy

Effective November 7, 2026

The short version: your files never leave your computer, there are no accounts, and this site sets no cookies.

Your files

When you open a GeoTIFF, it is read and drawn entirely inside your web browser. The file is not uploaded to any server, not stored, and not shared. When you close or reload the page, it is gone. You can confirm this yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, load a file, and watch what is requested.

What the page does request

  • This site’s own files: the page, its scripts and styles, and, when you ask for it, the sample terrain. When your file uses a less common coordinate system, the viewer also downloads crs-defs.json, a static list of coordinate system definitions. These requests do not include anything about your file.
  • Map tiles from CARTO. The background map is loaded from CARTO’s servers (the map itself is built from OpenStreetMap data). As with any web request, those servers receive your IP address and which map tiles you view, so they can tell roughly which area of the world you are looking at. They never receive your file or its contents. CARTO’s own policy is at carto.com/privacy.

Cookies, accounts and tracking

  • This site does not set cookies and does not use local storage.
  • There are no accounts. We do not ask for your name, email address or any other personal information to use the viewer.
  • There is no analytics or advertising on the site at the time of writing. If that changes, this page will be updated first to say what is added, why, and what it collects.

Server logs

Like any website, the company that hosts it may keep standard server logs (your IP address, the pages requested and the time) for security and to keep the service running. We do not use these logs to identify individual visitors.

Email

If you email us, we will use your address only to reply. Please do not send confidential data files.

Children

The viewer is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
